Earlier in July, I attended the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) in Toronto, Canada. There were more than 16,000 attendees representing over 100 countries. This was the largest Microsoft WPC event ever!
Included in this week-long event were exciting announcements, awards presentations, hands-on access to new technology gadgets, and my very tired feet from walking to all of the great events. What does all of this mean? It means this year's WPC might be the most significant one I have attended in the past 8 years due to the shear amount of new software Microsoft will be announcing and releasing in the next 12 months.
Announcements of new software and gadgets is fun and exciting, but awards are always a special part of WPC. This year, RoseBud Technologies received the East Region General Manager Award. More about this further on, but this award is a VERY BIG DEAL for which we are very grateful.
Now, I want to share a couple of quick observations and comments about WPC from my point of view.
1) The combination of Windows 8 and Microsoft Office 365 is going to be awesome. I'm not sure where to begin describing it except with some personal experience. I am running the Windows 8 Preview and the 2013 Office 365 Preview Edition on a Samsung Slate device. It is fast, portable, lightweight and is linked to my SkyDrive and SharePoint Online site. I can access personal and business applications on it and it never needs to be backed up because my data is in the cloud. I can use a stylus and take notes with it, take pictures and video with it, and share and collaborate with anyone via the Internet. In addition, I can reach my data from any Internet accessible device including my smart-phone, your smart-phone or PC, or a kiosk computer at a conference. There are a lot of "new looks" to Windows 8 and Microsoft Office 365, but deep down it is still Windows and Office but very much up to date and tightly integrated.
2) Two of my pet interests are Collaboration and Business Intelligence. You are sure to hear more about these topics from me in the coming months, too. Excel 2013 and Microsoft Office 365 have an analytical and collaborative capability that rivals a large in-house environment. More importantly, it is readily available and usable by our clients and RoseBud, which is very exciting!
Look for more information about these topics and other announcements from the conference in the coming months. We will specifically discuss Windows 8 Phone in our August newsletter. In the months following, we'll discuss the tidal wave of software coming from Microsoft including Office 2013, SharePoint 2013, Exchange 2013, and the next version of Microsoft Office 365.
