Begin with the End in Mind” – What Do You Want to Do With Your Life in 2010?

Is This You?

·         Promise yourself over and over you will pray everyday, but don’t.

·         Commit to an exercise program, start, but stop after a few weeks.

·         Have tried every kind of time management program there is but still feel out of control of your time?

·         Always in crisis mode?

·         When you look back at your year you can’t point to any significant goal you have achieved?

·         Get to the end of the week/month/year and feel like you haven’t gotten any of the really important things done.

·         Missing family events because you have to work late/weekends to get your work done?

·         Always waiting to the last second to get your job done?

·         Feel like your life is out of control?

·         Feel like you are doing okay, but still have times of being overwhelmed.

What Type of Time Management System Are You Using?

·         First Generation: To Do Lists

·         Second Generation: Calendar, PDA, Outlook

·         Third Generation: Planning System (DayRunner, Franklin Covey, etc.)

By themselves, NONE of these work! All of them allow you to manage your time, but not yourself.
There is a Better Way!

Quadrant II: A proven system that will:

·         Allow you to accomplish the most important goals in your life

·         Bring a sense of order and peace into your life

·         Get you out of crisis mode

This system works on paper, on computer, on a PDA, on ANYTHING! No special tools required.

Be Proactive

You have the ability to choose your response in ANY situation.

Response – Ability

Begin With the End In Mind

What do you want people to say at your funeral?

What are the BIG ROCKS in your life?

Focus on Effectiveness

Definition:

(Temporal): Doing only those tasks that leads you to accomplishing your goal.

(Spiritual): Doing only those tasks that leads you to accomplishing God’s Will.

Sadly, in any given day, most people are very distracted doing other people’s priorities and not their own (or God’s!)
Put First Things First

Biggest Time Wasters:

·         TV

·         Email (most people get email each day that fits into each category)

·         Some Meetings

·         Most text messages as they have a sense of urgency and yank our attention away from what we should be doing!

Create a Personal Mission Statement

As you look back on your life 30 years from today, what do you want it to have been about?

What is REALLY important to you?

One way is to define the most important aspects of your life in these 3 categories:

·         God

·         Family

·         Work

(For Regnum Christi members your Vocation Statement factors in heavily here.)
Roles

Breakdown your mission statement into the main roles that define your life.

Example Main Categories:

            God

                        Christian Man

                        Personal Development

            Family

                        Husband

                        Father

                        To Do

            Work

                        Manager

                        Product Development

Sharpening the Saw

This is a standard role that addresses “RECREATion”.

·         Physical

·         Social/Emotional

·         Mental

·         Spiritual

Schedule activities in this role EVERY week.

This is where you commit to your routine activities like prayer and exercise.

Goals

Plan specific goals for each role.

Breakdown each goal into its main tasks.

Plan Weekly

On Sunday or first thing Monday morning, review mission statement and goals.

Select the most important goal for each role.

Schedule some time that week to work on that goal.

Developing Your Plan for 2010

Step 1: Envision Yourself on January 1, 2011 looking back over 2010

Step 2: Write down the top 3 things you want to have accomplished in these areas:

                        God

                                    1.

                                    2.

                                    3.

                        Family

                                    1.

                                    2.

                                    3.

                        Work

                                    1.

                                    2.

                                    3.

Step 3: Review your goals to make sure they are specific and measurable. No “soft” goals.

Soft goal: Spend more quality time with my wife

Hard goal: Go on 2 “date nights” per month with my wife

Step 4: Identify the most effective task for each of the #1 goals above and schedule it for the coming week.

Getting Started

1.      Pick 1 task in one role.

2.      Put on calendar for the upcoming week

3.      Be smart when you schedule it to maximize the changes for success (Life’s Rhythm)

4.      DO IT no matter what.

5.      Review at the end of the week.

6.      Schedule additional roles & goals as you become successful in getting scheduled goals done.

TIP: It is okay to slide a task from one day to the next. Just make sure you get it done!

Let’s Give it a Try

Step 1: Define your mission

Determine the top 3 most important things for God, Family and Work that if done consistently would have a major impact on your life.

Step 2: Breakdown your life into roles

Define the key roles in your life and write on weekly compass

Step 3: Determine the goals for each role

Define the top 3 goals for each role. Break each goal into its main tasks.

Step 4: Schedule the tasks for the upcoming week

Determine the most important goal for each role for the upcoming week. Block out time in your schedule to complete that task. Be smart when you schedule your time!

Tips

Be smart about when you schedule a task. Set yourself up for success.

Start slow and build up.

Have others hold you accountable.

Use the calendar system you are already using for work related appointments.

Use the Roles system to file your email and your computer files

It doesn’t matter if you have a paper or paperless system just so long as YOU ARE CONSISTENT!

Have ONE system.
